The jury’s out for me when it comes to selfies. The web is full of them. With the advent of smart phones a camera is never far from hand and with a billion images being uploaded everyday, photographs are now one of our major forms of communication. This excites me. My teacher thinks photography is coming of age. I agree. But does the selfie represent the antithesis of good photography?

As someone who’s chosen to spend their career behind the camera, the idea of centering myself in the frame sends a shudder down my spine. I want my stories to do the talking. Who made them is inconsequential. This is the ‘why’ I reason with myself but perhaps something else is going on. In an industry where not one of the feature film directors I’ve worked with have been female, the decision to stay hidden may well be professional preservation.

But as the stories get bigger so does the responsibility to step out from behind the lens. You can’t light the path if you stay in the shadows. So in the spirit leaving the comfort zone for dust here’s a page of pictures; no photoshop, no make up, just me, myselfie and I.
